In your opinion, what does it mean to be healthy?

To move a lot, look beautiful, eat clean and keep smiling!

Do you follow any specific way of eating and can you explain a bit about why?

It is important to maintain a balanced diet and always eat clean. I fuel my body with fresh organic fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. I eat a lot of lean protein to stabilise my blood-sugar levels and unrefined carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes, for energy and optimised brain function. I also eat good fats to make my skin glow and hair lustrous.

Why is it important for you to feel (and look) healthy? Is there a back-story to why you eat the way you do?

It makes me feel good. Thanks to my diet and exercise routine, I have plenty of energy from morning until night. If you fuel your body correctly, you will glow from within and maintain your optimal weight. More important than how you look is how you feel. By eating healthily, you are energised, look great and have increased self-confidence. Being healthy is addictive.

What foods or groups of foods (if any) do you avoid? And why?

I avoid all processed food, refined carbohydrates and sugar. These products have no nutritional value, promote ageing and are the cause of many illnesses such as diabetes.

Do you cook every day? If not, how do you fit cooking into your weekly routine?

I love to cook! It is a gift passed down from my grandmother. With my busy schedule, I do not have much time to be in the kitchen, so I found a way to make nutritious meals in no time whatsoever. I follow my own recipes because they are healthy, quick and easy. To share my love of cooking and healthy food, I wrote a cookbook called Goodness for Goddesses, which is available on iTunes and Amazon for Kindle.

What’s your shopping routine? Farmers’ market, grocery store, online?

I shop in several different places: farmers’ markets, grocery stores and local delicatessens. My favourite places are around Chelsea, to name a few: Here (organic store), Andreas Veg (best fruit and vegetables to be found anywhere) and Partridges (for a more multicultural cuisine). When in America, I love going to Whole Foods Market. I could spend the entire day there!

What do you think are the most nutritious foods and how do you fit them into your diet and life?

This is hard as I love everything that comes straight from Mother Nature and that is in season. There is so much to choose from. I always make sure I include fruits, vegetables, protein, starch-free carbohydrates and good fats in all my meals. I love good earthy food full of vitamins and minerals, which give me energy throughout the day.

What is your optimal breakfast?

My optimal breakfast always contains: proteins (eggs, chicken, whey protein, plain yoghurt), healthy carbs (oats, sweet potatoes, millet, buckwheat), fruits (fresh or dried) and good fats (nuts, nut butter, olive or coconut oil).

How do you try and stay on track when you travel?

I always pack a homemade protein bar or dried/fresh fruit and nuts. It’s best to always be prepared. The best protein bars are made by top chef Alessandro Verdenelli and his talented colleagues Luca Unali and Gennaro Alise (all at KX Gym).

What are your favourite snacks?

I don’t tend to snack. My body functions better if I have three proper meals per day.

What is your food routine? Do you eat three conventional meals per day or do you have smaller portions throughout the day?

I have the breakfast of a queen, the lunch of a princess and a dinner that contains: grilled protein (meat or fish) and steamed vegetables (with a drizzle of olive oil). Sometimes I choose to give my digestive system a break and swap my dinner for herbal teas. Pukka is my favourite brand. Add a splash of rice/coconut milk and sweeten with stevia. I find it a good way to detox naturally.

When you go out to dinner, how do you navigate the menu? What are your tips for healthy eating in restaurants?

When I eat out, I always ask for plain grilled fish and steamed vegetables. My advice is to check the menu online before you go out. When ordering, try and ask for sauces to be put on the side. You never know what ingredients are hiding in the dressing!

What is the hardest part of the day for you to avoid temptation?

I believe that for most people, the worst parts of the day are mid-afternoon and post-dinner. If you have cravings, treat yourself to a good glass of water instead because sometimes we mistake hunger for thirst. Alternatively, grab an organic coffee, sprinkle some cinnamon on top (it will add fat burning properties) and enjoy the delicious taste. A warm cup of herbal tea, sweetened with stevia, is also a good way to help the body and the soul resist temptation.

Are there any specific food brands you love? Because of what they stand for or just the food they offer?

When you feel the need to detox, Imbibery London have a great selection of cleansing juices. I have just made a Bespoke Detox line with them. By using their juices with some of my tips and tricks, you will have the perfect cleanse. The juices get delivered to you door so there is no need to run around looking for ingredients or to wash up afterwards.

How do you treat yourself in terms of food?

I eat whole, organic food that is full of goodness. Food is not a treat, it becomes who we are. It should also be a pleasurable experience to be shared with family and friends around a table.

Have you ever tried a diet or detox that worked for you?

For those days when you really feel the need to be rid of unwanted toxins, I have created a Liquid Food Day ‘DIY Detox Day’.

I have tried so many diets in my life, only to arrive at the conclusion that they don’t work. Over the years, I have found that the key to looking and feeling good is having a balanced diet with all the right nutrients. Always listen to your body. There is no quick fix – just being consistent and having will power. However, for those days when you really feel the need to be rid of unwanted toxins, I have created a Liquid Food Day ‘DIY Detox Day’, which is available from Amazon. I wanted to provide others with a different way to detox.

What’s your exercise routine/schedule?

I like to train 30 to 45 minutes each day with my bespoke method. I prefer conditioning and low-impact exercises. As for cardio, I keep active all day. The key is not to stress your body. Quality and precision while performing exercises are the key to having a long, lean and toned physique.

Do you like trying new exercise classes/trainers/trends? If so what and why?

I’m currently hooked on Stewart Gilchrist’s yoga classes. Stewart is the yoga guru.

What do you wear to work out? Do you have particular styles for particular workouts?

Black leggings, leg warmers, big hair and a shiny lipgloss are my staple. My other secret is that I always wear Agent Provocateur lingerie under my gym clothes. It makes me feel sexy. I think that as women, it is always important to be in tune with our femininity.

How do you fit exercise around your work schedule? Do you have to do it in the early morning? Lunch hour?

I train in the early morning before my schedule gets crazy. Working out in the morning makes me feel energised for the whole day.

Any tips you have for fitting exercise into a busy schedule? The perfectly packed gym bag? Classes that don’t necessitate showering etc etc?

I found that it’s very difficult for busy women to fit exercise into their hectic schedules. That is why I created a new method that is tailored for them. Francesca The Method targets women’s trouble areas like glutes, legs, abs and arms. The precise exercises performed with specific equipment will sculpt the muscles to perfection.

The best part is that it only takes 30 to 45 minutes. It is the perfect workout for busy women: precise, efficient and time-saving. It is for this reason that I launched different workout videos, available to download directly from my website to your device of choice. For those days when you can’t go to the gym, the gym can come to you. Simply go to www.francescathemethod.com, click on videos and choose your daily workout.

I also suggest booking a date with the gym and writing it in your diary. Stick with it. You are the most important person in your life – without you, nothing else can exist!

Is there anyone you look up to as a healthy role model – someone who does it right in your opinion?

Powerful women are always a great source of inspiration. I always admire women who juggle many roles: working hard in and out of the office, being a caring mother, a sexy wife, a healthy cook, a trustful friend and most of all, fabulous in all aspects of a busy life. Always aim for the clearest sky and fly until you find your inner goddess.
