Byron Bay is one of my favourite places on this earth; it’s hippie and chic all wrapped into one. To top it all off, the food in this little beach community is truly extraordinary. Thoughtful, health-conscious and creative, every meal here seems to top the last. Here are a few of my favourites for breakfast, lunch, and dinner…

Naked Treaties

2/3 Marvell St, Byron Bay, NSW 2481

This is the real deal. An honest, inspired community that is dedicated to authentic, raw, vegan food. The walls are covered with inspirational quotes and the menus are packed with equally inspiring offerings. Specialising in superfood drinks and meals that are gourmet in presentation and taste, this place is a winner in every way and a must-visit.

Folk

1/399 Ewingsdale Road, Byron Bay, NSW 2481

Hands-down my favourite place to head to for breakfast in Byron. A deluxe “shed”, impeccably chic, with eclectic music, smiling staff and inventive comfort food. It was hard to choose off this beautifully crafted menu and even harder to leave.

Woods Bangalow

Arts Precinct, 10 Station Street, Bangalow, NSW 2479

A sister to Folk Café, Woods is tucked between inspiring design and art stores in the quaint town of Bangalow. It is a similar menu to Folk but in a more intimate atmosphere. Enjoy a tasty turmeric latte, hearty salads, and takeaway treats.

Federeal Doma Café

3-6 Albert Street, Federal, NSW 2480

This Japanese/Australian fusion café with idyllic outdoor seating blew me away. About 40 minutes outside Byron Bay, you can expect a scenic drive through the hinterland as you head towards the small village of Federal where Doma is nestled. The quality and inventiveness of the food they create from their tiny kitchen is mind-blowing. I don’t know what to recommend because the menu changes frequently and everything I’ve ever had is amazing. It’s a great place to challenge yourself with trying something new.

The Roadhouse

6/142 Bangalow Road, Byron Bay, NSW 2481

The cocktails at The Roadhouse are top-notch, but the food is equally alluring. They focus on sustainable farming, organic and local ingredients, with a paleo-focussed menu. It’s a fun night out, alive atmosphere and thoughtfully-presented menu.

The Mez Club

4/85-87 Jonson Street, Byron Bay, NSW 2481

Inspired by the Mediterranean food culture, combining flavours from Greece, Morocco and Turkey, this is the place to visit if you crave fresh ingredients that remind you of summer nights on the Med. The atmosphere is lively, the cocktails are ace, and, of course, the halloumi is perfect.

The Farm at Byron Bay

92 Woodford Lane, Ewingsdale, NSW 2481

It’s one thing eating a plate of beautiful food, but it’s another knowing exactly where it has come from and how it has arrived there. As well as being fantastic for breakfast, lunch and dinner, at The Farm you can also tour their facilities and learn the ins and outs of organic, sustainable and ethical farming. Our half-day there truly changed the way we think about the food we eat. Visit and learn!

Elixiba

Shop 10, Feros Arcade, 23 Jonson Street, Byron Bay, NSW 2481

This vegan café is tucked back off the main street, but go looking for it because their veggie burgers, coconut fried “calamari”, and creative drinks menu (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are outstanding. A vibrant place for a casual lunch.

Rae’s on Wategos

6-8 Marine Parade, Byron Bay, NSW 2481

Like on Facebook | Follow on Instagram | View website

This boutique hotel is the landmark on Wategos Beach and an absolute classic. A wonderful night out watching the surf, taking in the view and enjoying a sophisticated menu featuring local delights. It’s small so book ahead, dress up and savour this beach-front treat.

Combi

5b/21-25 Fletcher Street, Byron Bay, NSW 2481

I could stay all day working, reading and hanging in Combi. The food is fresh and delicious, the hot drinks hit the spot, and the atmosphere is exactly as it should be. A sibling to the popular Melbourne location of the same name, this new café at Byron Bay is definitely a place to stop at for breakfast or brunch… or both!
